Great service from American Express.

Naturally I eventually cancelled my Finnish Amex after moving to London. My final invoice from Finland had 1 euro of interest and 170 euro fee for next year.

I called them being sure they would remove it from my invoice - but it was even better: They had already done that without me asking for it and they offered to remove that 1 euro interest as well so I wouldn’t have to pay anything. I told them I’m happy to pay that :)

Now compare that to my ordeal with Bulldog Communications who couldn’t install broadband for in 2 months and still after almost 2 months after cancelling order haven’t refunded my 100 pounds installation fee.

Victoria & Albert museum

I went to V&A last Sunday and again as with most museums here it was great experience. I participated on a guided tour with only three participants(!) - guite amazing since it was right after doors were opened and there were immediately atleast 100 people coming to the place.

I would have never realized without guide real history behind V&A (to teach students about design to compete with other countries) nor that 2 of the rooms are filled with real size replicas of statues and monuments from other countries. Some of the replicas are actually better than originals since todays weather has damaged originals so badly.

My first impression of V&A was that it has long history but they are still able to keep it fresh with new stuff as well. I will be definitely visiting again - probably next time I will focus on some smaller area like England to get most out of it.

Christmas Pudding

We had company Christmas party last week and dessert was local speciality, Christmas Pudding.

I usually try almost anything (spiders and cocroaches will be skipped, though) and did also try this one. Even though I was pretty drunk at that point there was no way I could have eaten that cake.

That said, I really think it’s something my father would love and I’ll bring some to home when I’ll get there for Christmas.

Kyle Mills: Smoke Screen

Quite interesting political thriller about tobacco industry and anti-tobacco lobby.  Even though I’m definitely against smoking it was refreshing to read (fictional) story about both sides of the coin. This book should be definitely read by everyone who has extreme opinions about subject!

Differences between Helsinki and London?

Now I’ve lived here for some 3 months and I guess now I pretty much know what is different between Helsinki and London. Actually I was expecting more differences but here’s some things that I’ve noticed.

In U.K. your utility bills are somekind of proof of identity. Papers that would be easy to print with any modern printer are accepted easily. No wonder identity theft is an issue!

Some prices are more expensive, most of them are about the same and some things are cheaper. Obviously rents are higher - and also restaurant food. Public transportation is over 80 pounds per month. On the other hand food in the shops is typically cheaper but varies a lot depending where you shop.

Even though people are (or prentend to be) more busy here than in Helsinki they are generally more polite. On the street or tube it can be really crowded but when you accidentally bump into someone you will hear “sorry” from other guy immediately, even though it would have been your fault.

People do smoke here more than in Finland - I’m eager to see how next summer and smoking ban affects that.

Even though Brittish weather is said to be nasty I still tend to think that it’s nicer than Helsinki weather. In Helsinki you just know that half of the year it will rain almost every day but here you never know when it’s going to rain! Since global warming took away most of the snow from southern Finland anyway I don’t really think I will miss it too much!

I guess those are biggest differences in my opinion - as said differences are in the much smaller than I actually though.
